Strawbery Banke is a ten-acre living history museum that has preserved the lifestyles and traditions of four centuries in the waterfront neighborhood of Puddle Dock. Here you can see forty buildings spanning from the late 1600s to the 1950s. From the spare storefronts of colonial merchants to the elegant Victorian-era mansion of Governor Ichabod Goodwin, from the humble dwellings of Portsmouth’s early Jewish immigrants to the penny candy counter of the WWII-era Abbott Store, Strawbery Banke tells a story our past. Hours: May 1–October 31: Monday–Saturday, 10:00 am–5:00 pm; Sunday, noon–5:00 pm. November 1–April 30, guided walking tours are offered on the hour: Thursday–Saturday, 10:00 am–2:00 pm; Sunday, noon–2:00 pm. Closed: January. May be closed major U.S. holidays. Directions: From I-95 N or S, take exit 7 (downtown Portsmouth). At the end of the ramp, head south toward Portsmouth center (left if coming from the north; right if from the south). Proceed approximately one mile, through one traffic light, to a yellow blinking light. Bear right onto Russell Street. At the stop sign at the end of Russell Street, turn right. At the next intersection, turn left onto Maplewood Ave. Stay in the left lane. At the third set of lights turn left onto State Street and get into the right-hand lane. Continue through 2 sets of lights to the stop sign at the intersection of State and Marcy Streets and turn right onto Marcy. (Prescott Park is on the left hand side.) Proceed on Marcy Street, past the Museum Shop and Ticket Booth, and turn right onto Hancock Street to the Strawbery Banke Museum parking lot.
